Willen
is a holding company
of the group. This group has had the main big company named Conforja S.A
Conexões de Aço. It was founded in 1954 and is located in
the municipality of Diadema, which belongs to the Great Sao Paulo area;
the distance from the downtown is only 22 km and the plant is located closed
to the highways leading to the port of Santos. Conforja has an area of
about 130,000 square meters with the factory buildings covering 60,000
square meters. It was the most uptodate metallurgical plant in South America.

This group has
also the following companies: Forja Nordeste
S.A (Aratu - Bahia), ENAVE Empresa de Equipamentos Navais ( Rio de Janeiro),
Forja BEWE (Guarulhos -SP), Aletron Produtos Quimicos (Diadema-SP), and
Haso Industria de Plásticos (Diadema -SP).

I was hired by
Conforja S.A., but to work for the holding company, to take care of the
downsizing
project. This project means replace the old
and obsolete main-frame IBM 4341
by one local area network
and spread the distributed processing. This new environment was the Novell
Netware 3.12, Windows NT 3.0 and OS2/Warp
Servers.

The companies
were sharing the same plant and also the same
backbone and resources of information technology.
The shop floor applications
were specific for each plant. Some applications were centralized at the
holding company like as Accouting, payroll
system and financial. Some applications has
been replaced by new ones gotten from the market after benchmark has been
done with participation of final users.

Each company we
had at least one server. The number of servers was depending on the size
of number of users and applications. The OS2/Warp server was to receive
applications moved from the IBM 4341 main-frame and developed using ADABAS
Database with NATURAL language, such as billing
system, production planing and control applications.
Only the applications developed over ADABAS was kept to be maintained by
internal software team. The development team was reduced from 45 up to
6 people.

The CONFORJA,
FORJA NORDESTE, FORJA BEWE and ENAVE,
where plants to produce all kinds of flanges, forged connections such as
caps, large diameter welded fittings, concentric and eccentric reducers,
elbows short and long radius, tees and reducing tees, high pressure fittings,
light weight and heavy rolling (to produce seamless rings up to 4000 mm),
and special forging. These products are executed in carbon steel, alloy
steel, stainless steel and are supplied to the petroleum, petrochemical,
paper, cement, siderurgical, and also for companies in the field of electric
power, sanitation, mining, transportation. Also these products were exported
to Europe, Latin America, Asia and USA.Most of these companies were sold
and the main company CONFORJA is administrated today by the union of employees.
This group was property of a Germany family. After the head of family,
Mr. Willen, was died by cancer disease, the business got problems and the
family decided to prepare to sold the plants and the business. The downsizing
of the information technology was part of this plain. I went to this group
knowing that it was to be closed.
